Split PDF — One PDF per page, or by page range

This page in Japanese: 日本語

Split a PDF into one file per page. You can also extract only the pages you choose, like “1-3, 5,” or split it by page ranges, like “1-3, 4-6.” It’s completely free, as often as you like. No sign-up, no ads, and no app to install.

Split a PDF

How to split it

Write them like “1-3, 5, 8-10,” with digits and hyphens

Getting ready…

      How to use it

      1. Click “Choose a PDF,” or drag a PDF into the box on this page. The number of pages appears.
      2. Choose how to split it. For the two “pages I choose” options, write the pages like “1-3, 5, 8-10.”
      3. Click “Split.” Then click “Save” next to each new PDF, or “Save all as ZIP” to get them all at once.

Each new PDF takes the original name with the page numbers added (for example “contract-p03.pdf” or “contract-p01-03.pdf”). Your original PDF doesn’t change.

      Three ways to split

On a Mac, Preview can pull pages out too

Preview on the Mac lets you make a new PDF by dragging page thumbnails.

      1. Open the PDF in Preview and choose View > Thumbnails.
      2. In the sidebar, select the pages you want (Command-click to select pages that aren’t next to each other).
      3. Drag the selected thumbnails to the desktop. A new PDF with just those pages appears.

To delete pages, select their thumbnails and press Delete (changes in Preview are saved automatically, so choose File > Duplicate first if you want to keep the original). These steps are checked against Apple’s guide (Add, delete, or move PDF pages in Preview on Mac). For splitting dozens of pages one by one, or on an iPhone or a Windows PC, this page is the easier way.

      Frequently asked questions

      Is it really free?
Yes. It’s free for as many pages as you like, as often as you like. No sign-up and no ads.
How many pages can I split?
There’s no page limit. A PDF can be up to 500 MB on a computer, or 200 MB on a phone. Splitting hundreds of pages one by one takes a little while, because every new PDF is held in your device’s memory.
      Can I add a password-protected PDF?
No. A PDF that needs a password to open, or one with printing or editing restrictions, can’t be used here, and the page tells you so. Remove the password or the restrictions first, then add it.
Can I change the order of the pages?
Yes. Choose “Extract only the pages I choose” and write them in the order you want, like “5, 1-3.”
Can I still select text in the new PDFs?
Yes. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays text and you can search it. Bookmarks (the table of contents) and links that jump to other pages aren’t carried over (links to websites are kept). The pages you didn’t choose aren’t left inside the new PDFs.
I want to put the pages back together
Use Merge PDF Files to combine them in any order.

We also make Mac apps. For example, KoeShot lets you take screenshots and screen recordings on your Mac with your voice.
